2008 HP6930

As many of you are aware Hewlett-Packard (HP) rushed the opening of a new factory in the summer of 2008 to deliver the 2008 HP Elitebooks to Bentley in time for the start of classes.  We literally received the first 2,000 Elitebooks out of the factory.

HP met the deadline, but unfortunately some manufacturing defects resulted.  In addition to fixes now available, important updates are also available to be installed.

Microsoft Forefront
Microsoft Forefront Security Suite is Bentley University’s new defense against viruses and anti-malware! Forefront replaces Symantec Antivirus on your notebook computer. Forefront Client Security helps guard against emerging threats such as spyware and rootkits, as well as traditional threats such as viruses, worms, and Trojan horses.
ACTION ITEM:  Ensure you have Forefront running on your notebook by looking for the icon  in your system tray.  If you need to install Forefront please visit deploy.bentley.edu.
 

Replacement Computers
Nine hundred students received replacement computers last spring.  We have come to agreement with HP to replace the remaining 1,100 notebook computers from that original order.  If you were not part of the 900 students that received a replacement notebook you will be receiving a new computer. We will let you know as soon as we have a timeframe from HP.

ACTION ITEM: Keep an eye out for an e-mail from Computing Services with details about the replacement process
 

Vista Service Pack 2
Microsoft released Windows Vista Service Pack 2 (SP2) in May, 2009.  SP2 provides numerous updates and enhancements to the Vista operating system including improved performance for wireless connectivity from sleep and the latest desktop search engine, Windows Search 4.

ACTION ITEM: Ensure you have Vista SP2 installed on your notebook by right-clicking the Computer icon on your desktop, choosing Properties and then checking the version number under Windows Edition.  If you need to install Vista SP2 please visit http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/dd262148.aspx.
 

Office Service Pack 2
Microsoft released Office Service Pack 2 in April, 2009.  SP2 includes major performance enhancements including support for built-in file formats such as PDF, enhance stability with Outlook, better charting functionality in Excel and more control over SmartArt graphics. SP2 also includes significant security enhancements.

ACTION ITEM: Ensure you have Office SP2 installed on your notebook by opening Word, clicking on the Microsoft Button, Word Options, and then Resources. Fingerprint Reader Software
The fingerprint reader software allows a user to log in to his/her computer with the swipe of a finger. You can also use the fingerprint reader to log in to Blackboard, My.Bentley, Facebook, and other popular applications.

ACTION ITEM: Check to see if you are running the latest version 4.01.3751 which was made available to Bentley users in August, 2009. To find the version number open digitalPersona by swiping your finger on the reader NOT at a login screen. Click on Properties and the About tab.  If you need to upgrade to the latest Fingerprint Reader Software 4.01.3751 please following these instructions.  
 

Audio Driver Fix
An intermittent crackling sound has been identified. The crackling is caused by a conflict between the wireless and audio drivers. Updating the wireless driver resolves this issue.

ACTION ITEM: Install the latest wireless driver  by visiting http://clsv.bentley.edu/hp6930p/wireless_update.exe. (If you disabled Wireless Band 802.11a as part of the temporary fix please re-enable it using the HP utility.)
 
Battery Charging and System Freezing Fix
Some notebook have experienced either a battery that is not properly charging or their system is freezing. For either case an updated BIOS will fix these issues. 
ACTION ITEM:  Please bring your notebook to the Computing Services Desk to have the BIOS updated.
 
No connectivity when using a network cable
Some users have had issues connecting to the network using their network cable. HP has released a new Ethernet Driver which resolves this issue.
ACTION ITEM: Install the latest Ethernet Driver  by visiting http://clsv.bentley.edu/hp6930p/lan_update.exe (NOTE: you will temporarily lose network connectivity when installing the driver)
