Microsoft Forefront

Starting fall 2009 Bentley has a new antimalware security suite called Microsoft Forefront. Forefront works to protect your computer against viruses by detecting and disabling them before they can cause damage.  In addition to viruses, Forefront protects against worms, adware and much more.

Once installed, Forefront runs in the background checking real-time for malware.  By default on Bentley computers, Forefront runs a full scan every Friday at 10am.  Like other antimalware applications, Forefront is only as good as the last update.  For each known virus, a virus definition file is written to counteract the virus’s malicious intent. There are tens of thousands of known viruses and new viruses are introduced almost every day. Therefore, virus definition files must be updated regularly to ensure that Microsoft Forefront can detect and clean even the most recent viruses. FOR BENTLEY COMPUTERS UPDATES OF VIRUS DEFINITIONS WILL BE PERFORMED SILENTLY FROM ON CAMPUS AND WILL NOT BE SEEN BY YOU.

If a message appears indicating that your notebook has a virus, run a Forefront scan to see if it can be detected and deleted.  If this step is not successful, immediately shut down your computer and contact the Bentley Computing Services Desk.

The icons below in appear in the system tray and are helpful to understand.

When do I receive Microsoft Forefront and have Symantec AntiVirus removed from my computer?

Mobile Computing Program Students:
New students and juniors who received a new notebook after July 20, 2009, Forefront was distributed with your notebook. All other students will have Forefront "pushed" down to your notebook during the month of September. You will see a prompt in your system tray that will alert you to the installation.  This process will also uninstall Symantec AntiVirus.

Students with personal computers:
Students can download and install Forefront from deploy.bentley.edu (on-campus only) or stop by the Computing Services Desk to pick up a software CD.  If you choose to install Forefront, you should uninstall Symantec or any other antivirus application you are running prior to installing Forefront.

Faculty and Staff Bentley computers:
Faculty or staff who have received a new computer or a reimage of their existing computer since September 10, 2009 will automatically receive Forefront.  Others will have Forefront "pushed" down to their computers during the month of September. You will see a prompt in your system tray that will alert you to the installation. This process will also uninstall Symantec AntiVirus.

Faculty and Staff with personal computers:
Faculty and Staff can download and install Forefront from deploy.bentley.edu (on-campus only) or stop by the Computing Services Desk to pick up a software CD.  If you choose to install Forefront on your personal computer, you should uninstall Symantec or any other antivirus application you are running prior to installing Forefront.

Forefront replaces both Symantec Antivirus and Microsoft Defender.
